Don't Hire a Life Coach!
Author
James M. LynchDescription
One of the biggest challenges of the life coaching industry is that the leading practitioners first need to explain what it is before people can take full advantage of it.. Coaches need to assure clients that their services are practical, useful and real. The challenge is that there are a lot of life coaches out there who are 'muddying' the water and calling themselves 'coaches' when they're really consultants, therapists or worse, dilletantes, looking for a 'qet rich quick' opportunity. I've written this book to guide you at a fraction of the cost you'd pay for a one hour coaching session.
The trend right now is for the two US coasts, East and West, to lead the way in this industry and, for some reason, I've seen a lot of activity for coaching in England and Australia. The midwest is following, but slowly and progressive companies seem to be, as always, leading the way. But one thing is for sure, thoes people who are already successful know the value of hiring a coach.
Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, says 'Hire a Coach' was one of the best pieces of advice he ever got.
(Fortune Magazine, July 6, 2009).
But even if you've decided that you're ready for one, PLEASE DON’T HIRE a LIFE COACH until you read this book! If you already have a coach, this book will help you get more from them and make them better coaches.
Life coaching is a billion dollar business and yet it is totally unregulated, unsupervised and a large number of coaches are hobbyists, ‘get rich quick’ schemes or franchisees. Certification? Accreditation? Self-regulation? It can cost you hundreds, if not thousands to find out what’s in this book and that’s without factoring wasted time and opportunities . . .
And if you’ve been thinking of hiring a life coach: how do you choose one?
“There are thousands of people calling themselves coaches. I estimate between 30,000 to almost 80,000 call themselves coaches. I have also calculated that from 15,000 to over 25,000 additional people per year enter the field and consider themselves some type of non sports coach.”
Bill Deuease, The Coach Connection
What about coaches who come highly recommended but prove to be a waste of time?
“We hired a known life coach/corporate coach. She spent the morning telling us that we’d better be grateful she’d bought a new shirt for our seminar and the rest of the day making our 80 employees play musical chairs – literally!”
